Trauma and the Voice

By Dr. Emily Jaworski Koriath

“An indispensable resource.”

The effects of trauma are many and nuanced, but the primary problem for the teacher of voice is that the incomplete survival responses brought on by traumas large and small get stored in the body. The best singing and storytelling come from free and unrestrained bodies, functioning efficiently for peak performance. If there is emotional energy stored in the body, it inhibits a student’s best performing, not only emotionally but physically and acoustically. It is inevitable that we will unintentionally encounter a student’s trauma, whether or not they have the language to name it as such.
