Voice Lessons

You deserve to use your voice how you want to. I’m not the kind of teacher who will require you to sing music you don’t like or perform in icky torturous recitals. I’m here to help you clear up any misconceptions about singing that you may have, and to guide you in finding greater cooperation between body, voice, and spirit.

My Philosophy

Singing is a natural extension of the human spirit. Remember that moment in Jerry Maguire when he does the big thing and then is desperately searching for something on the radio so he can sing out the huge feelings? Yeah, THAT! In the course of my trauma training, we also talked a lot about the healing power of sound and vibration. Of course, as a classically trained singer, this felt verrrrrrry far away from my experience and I know a lot of people feel the same way. We are born with an impulse to sing and it often gets shamed out of us, or we get so overwhelmed by the pursuit of perfection that all joy is lost. And that sucks. And I want you to get it back.

Topics Covered

  • We Start With Facts

What’s a diaphragm and what does it actually do? Why can’t my belly fill up with air? Learning singing can often feel like a bad game of Telephone, where you pass a secret down the line and something completely nonsensical comes out the other end. Our game started in 1602 with the publication of the very first vocal instructions (Le Nuove Musiche by Giulio Caccini if you just like knowing things). Just a few tiny things have changed since then, so we do some fact checking and find out where fact and fiction blur and make things harder than they need to be.

  • We Invite Your Body to the Process

Singing is a full body phenomenon and pretending it’s not makes everything confusing! We’ll always be looking for ways to work that do not cause harm to your human system. It IS possible to accomplish vocal tasks while staying buoyant, flexible, and free and OMG it feels so good. I want to make sure that you get to experience the juicy, vibrant sensations of being a vessel for your sound and your message.

  • We Consider Your Needs as a Learner

Singing in front of people is vulnerable and tender. Learning new things and finding your way through a complex process can bring up a lot of stories we’ve told ourselves about our abilities. Throughout your learning journey, we keep your well-being at the center, looking out for signs of overwhelm, frustration, and shutdown. My trauma training also means that when these old stories arise, we can make space for them and even begin to dismantle their grip on you.
